What are hydraulic hose and pipe fittings?

A hydraulic fitting, or hose fitting is used to connect pipes, hoses and tubes to other components, including pumps, valves or switches, within hydraulic systems. Connecting the components securely, allows hydraulic fluid to flow through. Hydraulic systems operate under high pressure, meaning hydraulic fittings need to be strong and of the highest quality for systems to work safely and effectively.

Hydraulic hose fittings can be used across a range of industries including marine, automotive, power generation and aerospace. Hydraulic fittings are designed to stand up to high pressure, chemical corrosion and extreme temperatures. Hydraulic hose fittings can be made in a range of materials but fittings made from high grade 316 stainless steel will be much more durable when compared with brass or plastic. Depending on where the fitting is to be used, using less durable materials may not provide sufficient resistance over time.

There are various fittings which are used to connect the hydraulic system together. Commonly supplied items include compression fittings, threaded fittings and crimped fittings for use within pumps, valves and switches.

• Hydraulic compression fittings – providing water tight connections by using pressure to seal the connection.
• Hydraulic threaded fittings – with screw threads on either side of the connection, these connect with compatible threads for a secure connection.
• Hydraulic crimped fittings – these require crimping of the hose to the fitting.
